Mohawk, retired police dog, dies of
cancer
Friday, September 23, 2005
JOE SNAPPER - THE
SAGINAW NEWS
Mohawk, the pointy eared cop who barked at bad guys and took gunshots
meant for humans but lived to growl another day, has died just six
months into retirement.
The 11-year-old German shepherd, who ended his 10-year career with the
Saginaw Police Department in March, became ill Thursday morning. His
longtime partner and owner rushed him to a Lansing hospital for tests
that revealed cancer.
A few hours later, doctors put Mohawk down, Detective Sgt. Mark Lively
said, referring to a departmental e-mail that circulated early today.
Saginaw Police Officer Ruben Vasquez II, Mohawk's former partner and
handler, was not available for comment this morning. He was
distraught at Mohawk's passing, police officials said. After
making his last collar March 9, the pooch began enjoying the good life
-- a dog's life, if you will -- nibbling doggie biscuits in Vasquez's
home.
"He's kicking back and relaxing," Vasquez has said of Mohawk's
well-earned rest. "There's no if, ands or buts. He's the best partner
in the world. They're loyal. They are going to put their life on the
line for you." Since early December, Vasquez has trained a
new partner -- a German shepherd named Patriot -- who has replaced
Mohawk on the force. Patriot is one of two K-9 units at the
Saginaw Police Department. The other German shepherd, Rookie, is
handled by Joaquin Guerrero. The
namesake replaced the first Rookie, who died of cancer June 30,
2004. Patriot has quite a record to live up to. In a decade,
Mohawk assisted in 1,500 cases, including 800 narcotics searches,
Vasquez said. The dog found drugs 400 times, ranging from residue to
kilos of cocaine. Moreover, Mohawk sniffed out $250,000 in
drug-related cash seized by authorities. The dog also aided in
searches for suspects and the occasional missing child -- 400 searches
in all. Vasquez had boasted that Mohawk found his target a third
of the time -- much higher than the national average of one in
10. But Vasquez credits Mohawk most for drawing gunfire from a
fleeing armed robbery suspect in November 1997. The duo were giving
chase when the man spun around and fired three shots. "Two of them hit
Mo," Vasquez has said. "If he wasn't there for me, I would have had
three bullets coming my way." In March, Vasquez had said he was
just glad Mohawk can enjoy retirement in good health. "What's
kind of unique is that, with the amount of work we used him for and the
injuries he had ... for him to walk away healthy is unheard of,"
Vasquez said.

I lost my Police K9 partner Sunday the
18th. We buried him with Police Honors Tues. the 20th.

K-9 Arko died
September 14, 2005
from health
complications. He had been
on the force with me and worked 12 years. He died at the age of 13. He was retired for
only 5 weeks.
He was a dual purpose k9 with all the duties of a dual purpose k9. His
accomplishments cover 4 states and he was Nationally knowned. I'll
spare you all the details on that. He left behind his older
sister(Carey-Beth Hendley) a grand-daughter , and a very lonesome
handler. I miss him daily. He was also this Dept.'s 1st. ever k9 and is
buried here at the city hall.

Eggy, age 12. A GSD. She
was with the NCCPD for 5 years and was a narcotics dog. Her handler
was Joseph Blithe. After her retirement, Joey gave her to Kevin Woerner
[a NCCPD officer] and his wife, Elizabeth Woerner Alderson.
Eggy died at yesterday at 10 am. She had been living with Kevin.
Eggy was a real sweet
girl. We loved it when she would come in to see us. We would play with
her. She was never without her ball and would whine when she
didnt have her ball. Once, after her retirement, she was visiting here
and was taken next door to where the officers themselves are stationed
at. She "hit" on the evidence locker, showing that she smelled drugs.
Even though she was retired for several years, she still remembered her
training.
